hai una bella scheda video, che non ha problemi con compiz.

per installare i driver proprietari comodamente installa il pacchetto Envy-NG da adept (mi pare che ci sia, al massimo c'è il sito web con il deb). con questo comodo programma installi i driver proprietari per la scheda video automaticamente.
una volta fatto in adept cerca compiz fusion e installalo. compiz config settings manager e da li gestisci tutti gli effetti

a questo punto dovresti guardare sul file /etc/X11/xorg.conf

tipo con
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf | grep nv

nel file c'è questo

Ecco il punto era questo: la scheda è riconosciuta, ma i driver non sono quelli ufficiali della nvidia (in tal caso ci sarebbe scritto nvidia invece di nv).

Allora installali come dice obo e dovrebbe andare tutto da solo.

Non so, forse devi configurare certi repository con il software closed source.

Su Mandriva si va semplicemente in proprietà della scheda audio, ti dice che è disponibile un driver migliore e chiede se vuoi installarlo, poi lo installa.
Per compiz, si va nella voce "effetti 3D" del centro di controllo e si spunta la casella di compiz, anche lì scarica i pacchetti da sola se non ci sono già e ti dice di riavviare X.

da questo programma puoi installare i driver closed di nvidia senza problemi (pensa a riconfigurare da solo x.org).

poi puoi installare compiz sempre da adept.

non ne ho idea.
invece da avviare da terminale, avvia con l'interfaccia grafica (nel menu di kde c'è il collegamento ad envyng) e guarda se va in crash.

Ho installato più volte i driver nvidia sia su mandriva che su openSuse, ma non ho mai visto un sistema così macchinoso.
A questo punto, ti conviene scaricare il driver col pacchetto autoinstallante dal sito nVidia (e assicurarti di avere i sorgenti del kernel).
